How do you research products before selling on eBay?

  • I've been selling on eBay for about a year, mostly buying small batches of products from local wholesalers and reselling them online. Some items sell within days, while others sit for months even though similar listings seem to be doing well. Recently I bought a batch of kitchen organisers after seeing plenty of sellers asking decent prices for them, but actual sales have been much slower than I expected. I'm starting to realise that looking at active listings doesn't tell me much about what buyers are actually purchasing. I'd like to compare completed sales, average selling prices and competition before spending money on new stock. What tools are other eBay sellers using to research products and figure out whether there's enough demand to make a purchase worthwhile?

  • Active listings are probably the worst number to fall in love with, because they tell you what sellers hope to get, not what buyers are actually paying. Before buying a batch, pull the sold listings for the last 30 or 60 days and count how many moved compared with how many are still sitting there. Then ignore the highest prices and look at the range where most sales actually happened. A product selling 40 times a month with 500 competing listings is a very different bet from one selling 40 times with only 80 sellers chasing those orders.

  • Read about eBay analytics research tools here: https://easync.io/articles/ebay-analytics-tools/ . Sales volume is only half the decision when you're standing at a wholesaler wondering whether to take ten units or walk away. A product can move regularly and still leave very little once eBay fees, postage and your purchase price are taken out. Work backwards from a realistic selling price and decide the maximum you're prepared to pay for each unit before you order anything. That makes it much harder to talk yourself into stock just because the sales numbers look busy.
